NECO to Release 2026 SSCE Internal Results Thursday, September 24
The National Examinations Council has confirmed it will release results for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination Internal on Thursday, September 24, giving millions of Nigerian secondary school finalists their first look at how they performed on this year’s exams.
According to a circular seen by reporters on Tuesday, the results will be officially announced at 11am at NECO’s headquarters, located at Kilometre 8 along Bida Road in Minna, Niger State. The confirmation followed a meeting of the 2026 SSCE Internal Award Committee held at the council’s headquarters the same day, a gathering NECO described as the final stage of preparation before the results go live. The council’s official X account also confirmed the committee meeting had wrapped up as the last step ahead of the announcement, presided over by NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Professor Dantani Wushishi.
The SSCE Internal exam is written annually by students in their final year of secondary school, known in Nigeria’s education system as SS3, and functions as one of the two main pathways students use to earn the credentials needed for university, polytechnic and college of education admission, alongside the West African Examinations Council’s own SSCE. This year’s exam window ran from June 15 through July 23, spanning 76 subjects overall, with each candidate required to register for a minimum of eight, including English Language and Mathematics, the two subjects universities and other tertiary institutions almost universally require as part of any admission-qualifying result.
For students anxious to check their scores once the results actually go live Thursday, the process runs through NECO’s official results portal at results.neco.gov.ng. Candidates will need to select the 2026 exam year and choose SSCE Internal, referring specifically to the June and July sitting rather than the separate External exam NECO runs later in the year for out-of-school candidates. From there, checking a result requires entering a registration number alongside a result token, a 12-digit access code candidates purchase directly through the same portal.
This year’s release comes roughly on schedule compared to how NECO has handled recent result cycles. The council had initially indicated results would be ready by the first week of September, a timeline that slipped by a few weeks as script marking, data entry, score normalization and final verification worked through completion. That kind of gap between an initial projected release window and the actual announcement date isn’t unusual for NECO, given the sheer scale of what the council processes each cycle, typically covering well over a million internal and external candidates combined across the full academic year.
Looking at how recent years have played out gives a rough sense of what students might expect this time around. The 2025 SSCE Internal results showed a 60.26 percent pass rate at credit level or above across five subjects, including the compulsory English and Mathematics requirement, while the 2024 results, released on September 19 of that year, came in slightly higher at 60.55 percent under the same five-credit benchmark. Whether 2026’s results move meaningfully above or below that range won’t be clear until Thursday’s official release, and NECO has not yet disclosed any pass rate figures ahead of the announcement itself.
Beyond individual students checking their own performance, Thursday’s release carries real weight for Nigeria’s broader university admission pipeline. O’level results from either NECO or WAEC need to be uploaded to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s CAPS portal as part of the admission process for the country’s universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, meaning delays or issues with this year’s release could have knock-on effects for students working against upcoming tertiary admission deadlines. Students and parents anxious about the wait have been advised to rely on NECO’s own official channels, including its website and verified social media accounts, for updates rather than unofficial sources, particularly given how often rumors about exam board release dates tend to circulate in the days leading up to an actual announcement.
With Thursday’s date and time now confirmed directly by NECO’s leadership, candidates who sat the 2026 SSCE Internal exam have a firm point to plan around, after weeks of uncertainty over exactly when their results would finally become available.
